Arts Programs Receive More Than $500,000 from State Council
The New Jersey State Council on the Arts recently more than $500,000 to ĢƵ to support arts programs.
The grants include a record amount of $145,730 for the university’s Performing Arts Center, $56,030 for the Noyes Museum of Art at ĢƵ and $300,000 for the co-sponsored “State of the Arts” television program that airs weekly on New Jersey Public Broadcasting Service. The money will be renewed annually for the next three years.
The grants are part of more than $30 million the council awarded to approximately 900 arts organizations, projects and artists throughout the state. The funding comes from the revenue generated through the state’s hotel/motel occupancy fee.
“The investment made in our state’s artists and organizations has a direct, positive impact on New Jersey residents, families, businesses and communities,” said Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, who oversees the council in her role as Secretary of State. “It’s an honor to work closely with the council to help our state’s creative industries thrive, and to ensure New Jersey’s diverse constituencies can access the many benefits of the arts.”
Anjanette Christy, the director of ĢƵ’s Performing Arts Center, was thrilled with the increase in funding to support the center’s programming, which features more than 30 theater, music and dance events for the 2024-25 season. For more on the schedule, go to the center’s .
Professor’s Deep-Sea Discovery Could Help Find Alien Life
Lauren Seyler the search for alien life in the universe begins much closer to home — on the bottom of the ocean.
The ĢƵ assistant Biology professor — who also dabbles in astrobiology — spent three weeks this summer off the coast of Chile as the co-principal scientist on a research expedition studying the ocean floor near the Atacama Trench, at depths of more than 9,300 feet.
The goal? Locate areas called seeps where chemical energy, such as methane gas, is released. Then, using a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) take sediment samples and video and observe how that gas creates life where light, the most common source of energy on Earth, can’t possibly reach because of the depth.

Esports Innovation Center Names New Board Members
The Esports Innovation Center (EIC) at ĢƵ four new board members at its annual meeting on July 15, including Jennifer Aarons, Noel Criscione-Naylor, Demetrios Roubos and David Weinstein.
Aarons and Criscione-Naylor, both casino industry veterans, are School of Business faculty members at ĢƵ in the Hospitality, Tourism & Event Management program. They assisted with the development and launch of the University’s Bachelor of Science in Esports Management program. Aarons will serve as secretary of the EIC's Board of Directors, with Criscione-Naylor serving as treasurer.
Roubos brings over 15 years of expertise in innovation and cybersecurity as the founding director of ĢƵ’s Office of Information Security. He also established and grew the University's esports competitive program, which finished second in the world for Rocket League in 2022 and won the inaugural Garden State Esports Collegiate Cup in 2024. Roubos will serve as vice chairman of the Board of Directors.

Baseball Team Earns ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award
The baseball team qualified for an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award from the American
Baseball Coaches Association for the 2023-24 academic year. Over 800 teams from every
level of high school and college baseball were recognized by the ABCA for their academic
success.
ĢƵ earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for the fourth consecutive year. The recognition goes to programs coached by ABCA members that posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above for the academic year. ĢƵ was one of 181 NCAA Division III teams that qualified for the award this year.
On the field, the Ospreys won 22 games, just one shy of the school record for the second consecutive season. ĢƵ made history by winning the NJAC regular season title and earning the No. 1 seed for the NJAC Tournament for the first time in school history.
