Student Veterans Organization
Many schools have active veterans communities, but to have that community unified under a single banner, interacting directly with faculty and fellow students, is something unique to ĢƵ. The Student Veterans Organization (SVO) is a group for veterans who are ĢƵ students and community members that meet and connect on pertinent issues. The group serves as a meeting place for ĢƵ’s students and faculty and also hosts events such as bowling trips, paintball games, and “Coffee With Veterans.” The SVO is open to anyone who wishes to participate in meetings and to help honor those that have served in the military and those who continue to serve.
The military was not always as popular with ĢƵ’s faculty and student body, as was the case at colleges and universities across the nation, because of the Vietnam War. In the 1970s, several protests occurred on campus, and there was an instance of a faculty member ordering two recruiters to leave the institution. These social wounds took time to heal and ĢƵ did this better than any other place in New Jersey by being proactive and dedicated to the cause. Veterans Park, located between E Wing and G Wing, is a tangible symbol of ĢƵ’s dedication to its veterans, as is the recently renovated Military and Veteran Resource Center.
